The UBC Faculty of Applied Science Development & Alumni Engagement team is seeking an experienced Associate Director of Development to join our high-performing frontline fundraising team.

This position has a vital role in fundraising for one of UBC’s largest ever capital campaigns – the $250 million Applied One building. Applied One will be a nexus of learning and innovation, bringing students and researchers from several disciplines together to address some of our society’s most pressing grand challenges, and continuing to enhance UBC’s already world-leading impact on climate action and sustainability.

Faculty of Applied Science

The UBC Faculty of Applied Science’s core purpose is to discover, design, innovate, provide unwavering top-tier education and champion a community of responsible professionals devoted to serving a thriving, sustainable, and healthy society. The Faculty is home to one of Canada’s top engineering schools, as well as UBC’s highly-regarded schools of nursing, architecture and landscape architecture, and community and regional planning.

The Faculty of Applied Science Development & Alumni Engagement team is a tight-knit, collaborative and high-performing major gift fundraising team responsible for raising $20-30 million per year in support of the Faculty’s priority initiatives.

The Opportunity

The Associate Director of Development is responsible for managing a diverse pipeline of 75-150 prospects, making a minimum of 20-25 solicitations and raising between $1.5 – $5 million annually. This position will initially focus on fundraising for the Applied One capital campaign, developing and implementing comprehensive plans for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a large number of major gift prospects and donors for Applied One.

The Associate Director will work in partnership with and provide proactive and high-level support to senior development team management, senior faculty administration and faculty members to facilitate maximum support from individual philanthropists, foundations, and industry partnerships and collaborations. The incumbent is also expected to support and guide more junior colleagues through active mentorship and collaboration.

Qualifications

The successful incumbent will have:

  • A minimum of an under undergraduate degree in an applicable discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in major gift fundraising and strategy development, and in alumni relations/advancement. Experience in academic fundraising is preferred.
  • Capital campaign fundraising experience is a significant asset, including comfort with fundraising in a rapidly evolving campaign.
  • The ability to quickly and effectively move donors through the fundraising cycle, and efficiently work through large lists of both warm and cold prospects.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Experience facilitating industry partnerships and soliciting companies for funds is an asset.
  • Strong conceptual abilities combined with high attention to detail and the ability to work simultaneously on a variety of complex projects, and to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Proven curiosity, creativity and openness to learn and try new fundraising approaches.
